It was founded in 1971 by the then health minister of Delhi. Initially the college was started in chemistry department of north campus, and was later moved to Safdarujung Hospital. In 1986, UCMS was moved to Dilshad Garden which is its present location and became associated with Guru Ted Bahadur Hospital. Currently the institute is among the top 10 medical colleges of India as per the India today and Times of India ranking. The college offers medical and paramedical courses and caters to health care need of East Delhi community and surrounding border areas. UCMS has a huge campus with twenty one departments , 1 central library and 17 departmental libraries. The institute is a network centre for National Brain Research centre. It is one of the three public trauma centres in Delhi and is fully equipped with a burns ward and plastic surgery department.
